Quick Rumor Update
11.14.02
I read today that there is a six player deal in the works between Colorado and Florida (strange how those
two expansion teams are named for states and not cities, besides those two Texas and Minnesota are the
only ones that do that - weird).  The main players of the trade are Mike Hampton going to Florida and
Charles Johnson going to Colorado.  The teams are basically trading their salary problems.  This is a
good idea for Colorado, though.  They've proven that pitching doesn't win in the thin air.  If they want to
win they need to score tons of runs.  Here's my proposal for Colorado: keep Larry Walker and Todd
Helton and surround them with guys on other teams that are considered to be great defensive players and
sub-par hitters.  Going to Colorado will make them great hitters, just look at Neifi Perez, Todd Walker
and Jeff Cirillo.  So Charles Johnson is perfect.  They should also get Rey Ordonez, he'd probably hit
.330 with 25 HR and 102 RBI's if he played in Colorado [please do not e-mail me and tell me I'm crazy -
read a little sarcasm and hyperbole into this please].

If you have any other players that fit the bill, drop me an e-mail, maybe we'll put together a "perfect for
the thin air" team.
Rumors
11.6.02

Not much is really going on in baseball right now, but I just want to comment on a couple of rumors that
I've heard recently.

I read that Arizona has interest in signing Greg Maddux as a free agent to go along with Curt Schilling and
Randy Johnson.  This would be a bold move for a team that was widely considered to lose the most
money of any team over the last couple of years.  Chapter 11, anyone?  The best scenario, in my mind,
would be that they sign Maddux and then all three of their superstar pitchers show their age at the exact
same time and start to get beat up.  Wouldn't it be great to hear the media start the season off talking about
three potential Cy Young candidates and then have all three of them go 8-14 or so?

Rumors are flying that Roger Clemens might be tempted by the Astros or the Rangers to go to his home
state to pitch next year in order to get win number 300 there, even though he has said that he wants to
wear pinstripes next year and the Yankees have said that they want him back.  These rumors are dumb, if
you ask me.  Steinbrenner is a lot of things, but he places a high value on the history of the game and I?m
sure he wants Clemens in a Yankees uniform when he wins his 300th game.  And you know, whatever
Steinbrenner wants, he gets.  Someone on their staff will have to go, though.  Right now they have
Clemens, Pettite, Mussina, Weaver, Wells, and El Duque (not to mention the expensive Sterling
Hitchcock).  They are also rumored to be in the mix to trade with Colorado for Mike Hampton.  Talk
about overkill.

While I'm on the Yankees, they have expressed interest in Japanese star Hideki Matsui, a power hitting
outfielder.  I am surprised that Steinbrenner would have any interest in another Hideki after the "fat toad"
incident.

So the Phillies are chasing Jim Thome.  If they can?t get him they are going to try and get Jeff Kent to play
first base.  They are also rumored to be making a play for Tom Glavine.  You know that Scott Rolen has
to be pissed right now.  His whole problem with the Phillies was that they weren't going out and showing a
commitment to winning by putting together a team of winners.  Maybe if they would have gone after
players like Thome, Kent, or Glavine while he was there, he would have wanted to stay.  Oh yeah, they
are also looking for a free agent to take his third base spot - maybe David Bell.
