| 1.21.04 For the first time in my life I actually watched the entire State of the Union Address last night. GW is certainly no Bill Clinton when it comes to public speaking, I'll tell you that much. Also, I may not be writing Shakespeare here, but I thought that GW's speechwriters did a pretty crappy job with that speech. I think I've been conditioned to expect to much after watching multiple episodes of The West Wing where Sam Seaborn is always writing brilliant prose for the President's speeches. Why couldn't GW just hire the guys that write the scripts for The West Wing (other than the fact that they are all on the opposite side of the political spectrum)? I'm sure they could put conservative words together more artfully than his current speechwriters. ********* Anyway, I'm not going to comment too much on the content of the State of the Union Address because, well, I'd rather make fun of the writing than the content anyway. But there is one thing that I find myself forced to address - GW said that he plans on doubling the budget for promoting abstinence in our public schools. I have no studies or research to back me up on this, but my suspicion is that this is the most ludicrous thing I've heard in some time. Seriously. GW refuses to expand the education budget to give better pay to public school teachers or to provide books, computers, or other necessary supplies to students, but he is doubling the budget to promote abstinence in school children? I have no idea what that budget amount is, but regardless, I think that money could be better spent remedying our educational deficiencies than on promoting abstinence. Is venerial disease and teen abortion a bigger problem than the fact that our children are continually falling behind their contemporaries from other countries? Furthermore, does promoting abstinence to school children even accomplish its goals? I think we've seen from the Just Say No campaign that this type of philosophy is inherently flawed. Telling a 15 year old boy with raging hormones that he should abstain from sex is like telling a tree that it shouldn't drop its leaves during the fall because they make a mess. Doesn't GW remember when he was 15? I remember when I was 15 and... [after consulting with my attorneys it has been determined to be in my best interest not to finish this sentence]. To sum up: the money could obviously be used better elsewhere, especially since GW's philosophy of promotional abstinence does not work. ******* I always thought the british were supposed to be "stuffy". Apparently they are a bit more lax on their censorship standards for commercials than we are here. Check out these Trojan condom ads that air in Great Britain: Trojan Games #1, Trojan Games #2, and Trojan Games #3. ***** It has been many years, but there has recently been a new Jimmy Reed/Tatu sighting. Check it out. *** One more thing about GW: like him, hate him, whatever, let's not go overboard like the guy who posting the following on an internet forum board: "We are being sucked in just like the German people prior to WWII. And out of fear of retaliation even the elite are afraid to move against this evil in our nation. If this Nazi gets another 4 years we are doomed as a nation. Then it will be get you guns and head for the hills." * When I was in college and I would come home for a weekend or a vacation or whatever, I used to sleep a lot. My parents thought that I was just lazy, but as it turns out, according to this article, I was just using my brain creatively and artistically. See, it had nothing to do with all the beer... |
