Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees.  A Review.

Two months ago, I promised to inform you of my thoughts on the new Galaxies expansion.
Unfortunately, due to some unexpected twists and turns in my private life, the review was delayed.  Finally,
I've played it and the review is here.  I can safely say I was way off with my first impressions.  This
expansion kicks major ass!

First, a little history is in order.  To explain RotW, one must understand the situation Star Wars
Galaxies found itself in prior to the release of the expansion.  Son had just patched in the long awaited
Combat Upgrate.  Let's just say the upgrade was not what the players expected.  Many players (although, a
vocal minority) were understandably upset.  This wasn't just a rebalance job, it was a complete and
total new game.  Many, like myself, had been playing this game for two years, liked it, and didn't
particularly feel like learning a new game.  The Combat Upgrade eliminated Uber-buffs, Uber-armor and
relegated combat macros into obscurity.  No longer could you run out and solo a Rancor or Krayt Dragon
with one push of a button.  Now, you must group with friends and use strategy and tactics.  Despite the
fact that this is how it SHOULD BE in a multi-player game, the majority could not get over their hatred of
the change, and the player base was dissenting.

Then RotW was released, and it saved SWG!

Players realized that if they wanted to play with the new toys, and continue playing the game that they
love, they would have to work together and learn the new system.  Those who didn't quit were in for a
treat.  RotW contains hundreds of new quests, and not just the standard "Go here, kill that." or "Deliver
this and return to me." fair common in MMOGs.  The quests are epic, diverse and don't just center around
Kashyyyk, the Wookiee homeworld.  They take you all over the galaxy, on the gound and in space (the space
expansion Jump to Lightspeed is required for RotW, but also comes free with it if you don't have it already.)
Want an example?  Try going to Jabba's Palace on Tatooine.  Boba Fett has always hung out there, but
before, he was just for show.  Now you can talk to him.  He'll give you an epic quest to hunt down Durge,
the bounty hunter from the Clone Wars cartoon!  The new quests have terrific rewards as well, wearable
Clone Armor, Han Solo's blaster, new ships and clone war relics, including the new ships, Jedi Starfighter
II, General Grievous' ship, and the ARC-170!

The other features, cybernetics and space mining are less exciting, but the features make RotW more than
worth getting.  Rage of the Wookiees gets a "Mitchell was wrong and Sony really saved their asses" 11 out of
10.
